What Is GEP Math in Singapore? (And Why It Matters Even If Your Child Isn't in the GEP)
If you've heard about Singapore's Gifted Education Programme (GEP), you may have wondered: "What exactly is GEP Math?" "How is it different from regular primary school mathematics?" "Can my child benefit from GEP-style thinking even if they're not in the programme?"
At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, our founder Michelle is a former GEP Math educator with 30 years of MOE experience.
In this article, we'll explain what GEP Math involves and why it matters.

What Is the GEP?
The Gifted Education Programme identifies the top 1% of students in Singapore. Students are selected through a two-stage screening process in Primary 3. From Primary 4 to 6, selected students study a differentiated curriculum at GEP schools.
What Makes GEP Math Different?
Most students learn to apply methods correctly, produce accurate answers, and follow established procedures. GEP Math goes further. Students are expected to:
· Think flexibly and creatively
· Solve problems with no obvious starting point
· Justify and explain their reasoning
· Approach unfamiliar problem types independently
GEP Math emphasises thinking, not just computing.
Topics That Appear in GEP Math
· Number patterns
· Combinatorics
· Logic puzzles
· Problem-solving strategies
· Non-routine questions
Many of these topics require reasoning rather than memorisation.
The Most Important Skill for GEP Math
It isn't speed. It isn't knowing more topics. It's the ability to reason mathematically. A student who truly understands primary school concepts and can think flexibly will outperform a student who has memorised GEP problem types.
Does GEP Thinking Help Non-GEP Students?
Yes. The skills valued in GEP Math — logical reasoning, creative problem-solving, flexible thinking, explaining reasoning clearly — are the same skills that help students excel in PSLE and beyond.
How We Approach GEP-Level Thinking at By The Roots
At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, Michelle's GEP teaching background shapes our entire approach. Even in our standard primary classes, we encourage:
· "Is there another way to solve this?"
· "How do you know this is correct?"
· "What would happen if the number were different?"
We believe every student benefits from learning to think, not just calculate.
Final Thoughts
GEP Math isn't just for gifted students. The thinking habits it develops are valuable for every primary school child. When students learn to reason mathematically, they become more capable, more confident, and better prepared for PSLE.
