How to Help Your Child With Primary School Math at Home
Most parents want to help.
Most aren't sure how. That's completely normal.
At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, this is one of the most common questions we get from parents: "What can I actually do at home?"
Here's honest, practical advice.

You Don't Need to Know the Math
The most important thing to say first: you don't need to be able to solve Primary 5 problem sums to support your child. What helps most is:
· Asking the right questions
· Modelling the right attitude toward difficulty
· Creating conditions where your child thinks — not just receives answers
What Actually Helps
1. Ask "Why?" Not Just "What?"
When your child gets an answer, don't check if it's right first. Ask:
· "Can you explain how you got there?"
· "Why did you choose that method?"
· "Does that answer make sense?"
A child who can explain their thinking genuinely understands. A child who can't is executing steps without understanding.
2. Let Them Struggle (Briefly)
When your child is stuck, wait 3–5 minutes before stepping in. Try:
· "What do you know about this problem so far?"
· "What would you draw to represent it?"
The struggle before the answer is where real learning happens.
3. Use Physical Objects (P1–P3)
Coins, buttons, paper strips, building blocks — abstract numbers become real when children can touch them. You don't need to buy anything special.
4. Read the Question Together
Many marks are lost not because children can't do the math, but because they misread the question.
Read problem sums together slowly:
· "What is this asking for?"
· "What information have we been given?"
5. Don't Express Anxiety About Math
"I was never good at math either" is passed directly to children. Try instead:
· "This is tricky — let's think it through."
· "Making mistakes is how we learn."
What Not to Do
· Don't immediately show the method when they're stuck — the struggle matters
· Don't compare them with siblings or classmates
· Don't add more worksheets as the first response to difficulty
· Don't reward speed over accuracy
When Home Support Isn't Enough
If your child consistently struggles despite effort, has foundational gaps from earlier years, or can do work with you present but not alone — it may be time to seek specialist support.
At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, we identify exactly where the breakdown is and close it systematically.
Final Thoughts
The most powerful thing a parent can offer isn't math knowledge. It's a calm, curious attitude toward difficulty.
