Primary 4 Math: Key Skills Every Student Should Master

P4 is where the gaps start to show.

For many students, Primary 4 is the first year mathematics feels genuinely difficult. Fractions become more complex, multiplication must be fully fluent, and foundational gaps from P1–P3 begin to surface clearly. At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, we work with many P4 students at exactly this turning point.

What the P4 Syllabus Covers

·         Whole Numbers: numbers up to 100,000; factors, multiples; rounding

·         Fractions: equivalent fractions; mixed numbers and improper fractions; unlike denominators

·         Decimals: tenths, hundredths, thousandths; operations

·         Measurement: area and perimeter of rectangles and composite figures

·         Geometry: symmetry; angles; rectangles and triangles

·         Data: tables, line graphs, problem solving

The biggest jump from P3 to P4 is fractions. If your child is struggling in P4, start there.

Key Skills to Master by End of P4

1. Multiplication Facts — Fully Fluent

By end of P4, all multiplication facts (1–12) should be automatic — not just correct, but fast and effortless. Gaps here affect fractions, decimals, area — everything that follows.

2. Equivalent Fractions

Understanding why 2/4 = 1/2, not just executing the procedure. Students who only know the rule consistently struggle when fractions appear in word problems.

3. Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators

The classic P4 stumbling point. It only works if equivalent fractions are truly understood first.

4. Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

Conceptual understanding, not just procedure. Students who understand can self-check. Students who only know the steps make systematic errors they can't catch.

5. Decimal Concepts

Decimals build on fractions. A student who doesn't understand what 0.3 means in relation to 3/10 will struggle later with percentage.

6. Bar Models

By P4, bar models should be the default tool for problem sums. If your child can't draw one independently, that's worth addressing before P5.

Warning Signs in P4

·         Still hesitates on multiplication facts

·         Can do fraction sums but loses marks on word problems

·         Confused converting mixed numbers and improper fractions

·         Can't explain why they chose a method

·         Avoids unfamiliar-looking problems

How We Help P4 Students at By The Roots

Our P4 approach focuses on:

·         Securing multiplication fluency through games and pattern work

·         Fractions taught with physical tiles before procedures

·         Bar model fluency built progressively

·         Decimals understood as fractions, not a separate concept

Our founder Michelle has 30 years of MOE experience. She knows exactly which P4 foundations matter most — and what happens if they're skipped.

Final Thoughts

The students who struggle in P5 and P6 are very often the ones who had unresolved gaps in P4. Don't let P4 gaps become P5 walls.
