PSLE Math Preparation Guide for Primary 5 Students
PSLE is won or lost in Primary 5. Most parents don't realise that.
By the time students reach Primary 6, the ones who do well are almost always those who used P5 to build the right foundations.

At By The Roots in Bukit Timah Plaza, this is one of the most important things we tell P5 parents.
Why P5 Is the Critical Year
The P5 syllabus introduces the topics that appear most heavily in PSLE:
· Fractions (mixed operations, unlike denominators)
· Ratio (equivalent ratios, problem sums)
· Percentage (percentage change, reverse percentage)
· Area and Perimeter (composite figures)
· Volume (cubes and cuboids)
A student who leaves P5 with shaky ratio or percentage will face those gaps again in P6 — compounded.
What to Focus On in P5
1. Understanding, Not Just Completion
More practice papers is not the answer if your child doesn't understand the concept. Ask: Can they explain why a method works? Can they apply it in an unfamiliar format?
2. Bar Models
By P5, bar modelling should be automatic. Students who draw models consistently outperform those who jump straight to equations — especially on ratio, fraction, and percentage questions.
3. Fractions, Ratio, and Percentage as One Family
These aren't separate topics. They're different representations of the same relationship. Students who see the connections find P6 revision far more manageable.
Warning Signs in P5
Watch for:
· Consistent marks loss on fraction, ratio, or percentage problem sums
· Avoidance of multi-step questions
· Can't explain their method when asked
· More work, but no improvement
These signal a conceptual gap — not an effort problem.
How We Help P5 Students at By The Roots
At By The Roots, we work with P5 students to:
· Identify and close foundational gaps from earlier years
· Build genuine understanding of the key P5 topics
· Develop bar modelling fluency
· Build the confidence to attempt unfamiliar problems
Our founder Michelle has 30 years of MOE experience, including as a GEP Math educator. P5 is not too early to prepare for PSLE. It's exactly the right time.
Final Thoughts
The students who perform well in PSLE are rarely the ones who worked the hardest in P6. They're the ones who built the right foundations in P5.
